Formed in Fort Worth, Texas, The Flying Beets burst onto the indie rock landscape in the spring of 2022, quickly establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned within the Dallas Fort-Worth area as well as the larger independent music scene.
Led by the dynamic and immensely talented singer-songwriter Nathan Waller, the band has captivated audiences with their raw authenticity and introspective lyrics. Joining Waller to form the trio is talented and eclectic bassist David Cross as well as Kenn Scott on drums.
Yes, for the keened eye, Scott is from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fame – a fact too good to not include. Also, yes, Raphael IS and ALWAYS WAS the BEST TMNT.
Singles like Villain, a wickedly and shockingly more complex take than first listen might let on, allowed The Flying Beets to put a stranglehold on timeless, yet innovative rock. The sort of music that trots between genres, making it easy listening for fans of any particular subset to get excited about.
More recently, the threesome released The Stupid Way You Breathe, another raw and powerful track, sucking in listeners with Cross’ always consistent keeping of the low end, Scott’s forever in the pocket fills, and Waller’s gripping lyrics and vocals.
The Flying Beets are not just another band; they are a testament to the power of music to convey deep emotions and connect with listeners on a profound level. And yet, they are nowhere near done.
Over the course of releasing music, Waller has consistently proven his vocal prowess with every opportunity coming his way. His powerful voice and evocative songwriting are the driving forces behind the band's success. Each song is carefully crafted, imbued with introspection, and explores themes of loss, love, and the human experience.
Waller’s ability to weave these themes into their music has resulted in a sound that resonates deeply with listeners, leaving a lasting impression long after the final note – helping not only with the initial earworm factor, but replayability of each track.
The band’s connection to music goes beyond only their approach to creating music for fans. From their inception, The Flying Beets have been a staple in the indie music scene. Their commitment to authenticity and emotional honesty sets them apart from many of their peers, as does their often insistence to help highlight other musicians over themselves.
Led by Cross on this front, The Flying Beets have helped a sometimes disorganized indie scene, helping artists reach audiences they otherwise might not have reached if it had not been for Cross’ ability to not only organize, but channel his passion for music into a group effort, allowing for numerous bands to grow over the course of less than two years.
Their songs present a raw authenticity that is both refreshing and compelling, capturing the essence of what it means to be truly indie. The band’s dedication to their craft and their relentless pursuit of musical excellence has earned them a loyal following and acclaim within the indie community.
A true stalwart of the indie scene, The Flying Beets aren’t likely to be contained within its bubble for much longer. With singing, lyrics and melodies simply too good to not reach more people, it’s only a matter of time before this DFW area-based trio are being blasted on radio airwaves, featured in festivals and inspiring more artists to take their talents to the next level.
